How to: packing for holiday with only cabin baggage

Every year Sam and I go on holiday to see his Dad in Spain and every year we challenge ourselves to go with only cabin baggage. This has made us experienced in packing light, so I thought I'd share some of my tips with you guys!

This is what I'm taking:

So I start by thinking how many days I have, how many evenings and what I'll be doing in the day. For me, this holiday will involve 4 days, 4 evenings, and days by the pool plus travelling clothes. Therefore I initially laid out my pool stuff (2 bikinis and a cover-up) and 4 sets of underwear all in the back left corner. For travelling with only hand luggage, I recommend investing in a fold up lingerie bag and laundry bag which I got from Marks and Spencer. That means if they open your bag at the x-ray machines, nobody has to see all your undies!

I then laid out 4 daytime and evening outfits:

holiday packing

Day 1: Pink cami from Warehouse - £12, denim shorts from New Look - £14.99
Day 2: Topshop vest top - £18, red floral skort from Miss Selfridge - £25
Day 3 - Topshop lace hem top - £32, bench beige shorts - £23
Day 4 - White vest top with secret support - £12, Arrogant Cat pink skirt with fluted hem - £15

Night looks
Mango spot playsuit - £19.99
River Island stripe bardot dress - £30
Topshop Lime Lace Back playsuit

Then extras:

The travel makeup bag is probably the hardest part! Now you can't take liquids, you have to be inventive which is heartbreaking now I'm a big fan of Caroline Hiron's skincare tips. Therefore the only liquids I'm taking are:

and remember to invest in a clear travel bag. I like this one with bottles in from Marks & Spencer. Then I am using a felt-tip eyeliner from Eyeko, powder bronzer and oil-removing powder and highlighter.

Finally, does it all fit in the bag...? of course!

Good luck packing and happy holidays!

A Weekend Wedding

I love a love story and I love a wedding! This weekend I was lucky enough to be invited to the wedding of one of my boyfriend Sam's best friends to his sweetheart and I was bursting with excitement. I loved the day and thought I would share with you a brief photo diary of the day.

My dress is the French Connection Alanis red Jersey maxi dress which is now reduced to £42.50! It's such a beautiful dress which I raved about here. I teamed it up with my lace cardi from Republic (although there is a beautiful one here which is similar), Biba Ruby clutch bag which I got from Sam last Christmas, a gold necklace from H&M and gold bangles from ASDA

I GOT A PHOTO OF SAM SMILING!

and obviously a lovely photo of the bride and groom - congratulations Lloyd and Stacey!

My Lunch Date at Jamie's Italian in Brighton

It's no secret that I'm a huge lover of Italian food. Pasta and Pizza are my true loves and without them I would be very sad and lonely! So when I was invited along to the new Jamie's Italian Brighton in my home town of Brighton I was very keen! Jamie's Italian has been very special to me - I had my first Valentine's Day date there 2 years ago and have been for birthdays and anniversaries since. The Brighton one is based down in the Lanes besides the beach so after a hard day of shopping, it's easy to pop in and have something yummy.

The restaurant was much bigger than it looked and had a lovely undercover seating area with astro-turf so we decided to take little Teddy along

The staff were very accommodating to us and our little puppy and all gave him a huge fuss. They even moved our tables when it started to spit with rain. Our waiter was called Tom who was such a lovely guy and did everything he could to help us have a brilliant lunch date.

We had...

I had my absolute favourite in the world - carbonara - and it was just delicious. I considered having another carbonara instead of pudding. Sam had a spicy sausage pizza and we rounded it all off with some funky chips (garlic topped... amazing) and orange juices.

After this I wondered inside to find the toilet and discovered there was a projector showing the chefs making our food

We then treated ourselves to pudding and I had another all-time favourite... pavlova, whilst Sam had a chocolate brownie with salted caramel icecream and popcorn!

Overall, we had a brilliant time! I have maintained my long-standing love affair with all things Jamie Oliver and Italian and would definitely go back again. Thank you for the opportunity!

My favourite Victoria Sponge Cake recipe

I love baking and I know loads of you lot do too, so I thought I'd be a good soul and share my family's secret recipe for the lightest, most delicious victoria sponge cake you've ever had!

For the cake

  • 250g butter, melted until almost liquid
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 250g self-raising flour
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence

For the decorations
  • some jam (we use raspberry in our house)
  • 500g icing sugar
  • 160g butter
  • 1tsp vanilla essence
  • 50ml milk
  • 3 packets of chocolate fingers
  • packs of various fruit

Make the cake:
  1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees
  2. In a bowl, put the melted butter and sugar. Whisk until it goes pale and fluffy with a hand held electric mixer
  3. Add the four and baking powder and slowly whisk as you pour in the eggs and vanilla essence
  4. Keep whisking until fluffy and light. The mixture may be thicker than you're used to but it's perfect
  5. Grease 2 20cm springform cake tins and divide the mixture evenly
  6. Put in the oven for around 20 minutes, or until the top bounces back when you touch it and a skewer comes out clean if you stab the middle.
  7. Take out the oven, pull out of pans and leave to completely cool

While the cake is cooling, make the buttercream icing by whisking the icing sugar, butter, vanilla essence and milk for 5 minutes until light and fluffy

Next, using a bread knife take the tops off the cakes to make them flat. Then spread a quarter of the buttercream on the top of one, and loads of jam on top of the others. then sandwich them together so one cake is upside-down to leave a smooth top. This should make the cakes just slightly smaller than the fingers to allow lots of toppings!

Using a palette knife, spread all over the cake with buttercream. If you are picking up lots of crumbs, dip your palette knife in hot water between spreads. Then stick the chocolate fingers along the side like a little wall (which left 2 for me to eat!). Take your palette knife again and smooth the icing until it is flat against the chocolate finger wall and then using your fruit, create a pretty pattern on top! Lovely!

Outfit post: Confused Weather Outfits

The weather is a little confusing at the moment and I've been a bit lost with what to wear - muggy, rainy, hot, sunny... layers are my friend! This is one of the strange outfits I chose to wear.

Top from Accessorize. This is actually a PJ top of which I have a few but I also wear them during the day! Skinny jeans are from the Lana range in River Island for £40. The trainers are Adidas Honey Stripes mid - £52 which I love as an alternative to the Nike blazer shoes which I got for my birthday and was so disappointed by. The tongue on the Nikes are exposed foam to look "retro and worn", but for the cost I didn't want my shoes to look already worn so swapped to the Adidas version which I love!

I decided to do my hair in a really messy halo braid (see my very old video tutorial here) because it hides wet weather frizz

Outfit Post: Brat & Suzie Donkey t-shirt

Months ago, I fell in love with a Brat & Suzie donkey t-shirt on ASOS. I discovered that Brat & Suzie were a super-cute clothing brand who prints their own items with animals on! I was completely sold but then heart-broken to discover it was sold out everywhere

Anyway, I was on their website a couple of weeks ago and found they were doing the donkey print on a t-shirt so I quickly snapped it up! I wore it on sunny Saturday

I'm wearing - t-shirt from Brat & Suzie - £20, shorts from New Look, flip-flops from Gap - reduced to £13.99, watch from Citizen

So what I learned from that experience is if you love something, buy it before you lose the opportunity!

The Birthday Post: What I wore and what I did

Last month it was my birthday, but I've been so busy I hadn't gotten round to blogging it yet! Here's the catch up

Sam and I took the day off work and had fun doing not much! We went to 7Bone in Southampton first for burgers

Wearing one of my pressies from Sam - Benefit Cha Cha Tint- I'll review this soon!

I had a delicious cheeseburger called Hucknell's Winkie

and Sam had the ridiculous "Taking LeTiss" burger - that's right, it's two burgers, bacon, maple syrup and cheese WITHIN A FROSTED DONUT!

We were planning to go to an icecream and cocktails bar afterwards but we were so full and feeling a little sorry for ourselves so we came home and had a birthday nap! Sam then woke me up with birthday G&Ts in these beautiful Great Gatsby glasses which I have been wishing for - what a lovely surprise!

He also got me this beautiful ASOS kimono dress and we were ready to hit town again!

We went to Jamie's Italian in Portsmouth and sat on deckchairs drinking cocktails!

And a couple of days ago, Rhodesian of Edinburgh sent me a beautiful satchel for my birthday (thank you!)

which has been perfect for walking little Teddy. I'll post more about it soon. But for now, enter my CHARITY RAFFLE to win one of your own in blue!
