Sewing Marilyn's dress from Famous Frocks

I was sent "Famous Frocks" by my best friends from Uni for my birthday and was itching to try it. It's an amazing book for anyone who loves sewing. Containing the patterns and instructions for making 10 of the most famous historic dresses, and 10 variations on those. From Marilyn Monroe and Twiggy to Rita Heyworth and Diana Ross!

I made the Marylin dress this weekend from a polka-dot denim.

Here's the dress

and the variation I made with a cross-over back rather than a halter-neck

The book contains easy to understand instructions, pages on how to do techniques and read patterns so brilliant if you're a novice dressmaker.

And here's the finished dress. It took me a day to do which isn't too bad.

And the back. I put in an exposed zip rather than the hidden one suggested (for those curious, the scar down my back is from a scoliosis spinal fusion. Here's my spinal fusion story

I think the dress would look better if I had any boobs, but I can't wear a bra with it. It will make a lovely summer dress if the weather perks  up!

I can't wait to try out more patterns. I really love this book and recommend you buy it if you like dress making or want to start. It's only £10! That's the same price as some patterns!
