Review: My Groupon Boots!

Last month I was given a £20 Groupon giftcard and after a few weeks of umming and aahing over the daily newsletter I decided to use my voucher to buy some boots

The offer was £15 for £50 voucher for Urshu - a company I had not heard of before, but if Groupon trusted them then so did I! They had loads of winter boots but one pair really stuck out so I purchased the deal. The next day I was emailed a "voucher" with my code on

I went to the Urshu website and chose my boots (the ones on the far left of the picture). They were £70 but with the Groupon code they were £20 - bargain! I bought the boots and excitedly awaited my parcel.

They arrived just under a week later

I immediately pulled them on and went out to a scout fireworks night at a local woods (the boyfriend is a scout leader, I don't just go hang round the scouts for fun!)

My boots in the dark forest!

and I wore them shopping at the weekend where I encountered an enormous Lego Hagrid from Harry Potter.

Overall, I was very happy with Groupon themselves and have since bought more from them (it's so naughty, I shouldn't be spending but they're such good deals) but I'm not completely happy with the boot company...

When I later went to the Urshu website, it indicated that they had closed now the Groupon deal was done and that they had actually only set up the website for Groupon. Curious... The "about" section of the Urshu website indicated that the company belongs to BW Group. I googled BW Group and discovered that they're a wholesale company and discovered that in fact the boots which apparently RRP at £70, cost £18.99 each for a box of 14. Therefore my £15 voucher + £20 for the boots means that overall they've made £16.01 from me and the boots weren't such a bargain afterall. I kind of got caught up in the "bargain" of it all and I'm not sure that I would have spent £70 on them in the first place as they're not real leather.

I guess the moral is that Groupon is a fab idea and you can get haircuts, photo canvasses, spray tans and loads of stuff at really good value (anyone remember the amazing ASOS voucher deal?!) but DO research international deals and think before you click because you might end up spending more than you think. However I don't feel entirely ripped off because I have some lovely boots.

  1. They are lovely boots. I think some companies do kind of abuse the whole Groupon thing but that is part of the gamble when using a site like that x

  2. WOW these boots look so cosy and cute for winter :)

  3. I wasn’t aware at all that some sites were set up just for groupon! great post, the boots are lovely I like them rolled down. I avoid groupon because the beauty offers are just too tempting!

  4. There was a whole thing about Groupon on Watch dog a little while ago. People where buying the 'discounts' but when it came to booking the deal the company was over run with demand and couldn't accommodate everyone who purchased the deal.
    Was a really interesting watch!!!!!

    Lovely boots though hun xx

  5. Woah Groupon! I never knew that they did offers on fashion and beauty products! I am usuallty thinking of my stomach so have only ever used it for discounts in resteraunts and bars.. more fool me. Thanks for the tip, those boots are lovely, especially rolled down. Gonna go check out groupon now to see if i can let a little deal on some new Boots

  6. Intresting read, i saw the boot offer and before i booked i checked out the website . On closer inspection of the boots i was suspicious. These were the kind of boots i could get from my local markets for under £20.00 plus i had my suspicions this website had only been created specifically for groupon .
I have always got really caught up on the groupon offers. they sound so tempting but my money wise side of me always means that i will actually google the offer they have on (to find the true value) before i purchase. This way you know whether it is actually a good offer.

Groupon has some positive deals , i broughts some perfumes such as Wera Wang and Sara Jessica Parker which were delivered (FREE,Sometimes the delivery of the items you brought are ridiculous)straight to my door and at a reasonable offer :) .

Overall i think you shoud be carefull when buying from groupon and find out if it is good offer.

Really like this post i answered a lot of questions i had .Thanks Lauren

  7. Thank you! You've just saved me from buying two pairs of snow boots via Groupon, a pair each for myself and my daughter. It's annoying that some companies abuse the Groupon system and you can end up buying something that isn't really such a bargain after all.

  8. So glad I found this, I too was tempted by the snow boots, will give it a miss and go to my local Clarks store instead.

  9. I have bought 2 vouchers. I'll let you know what the boots are like but- urshu appears on every discount site, voucher clouds, and many more.
    Fingers X!

    Your boots do look nice!

  10. Thanks for the warning - I was just considering buying a pair (the company is back on groupon offering boots for £19 claiming that is 68% off) but thanks to your post I realise it is no bargain and won't. I did get one groupon deal that was good - a hotel in Morocco - but others have been much less discounted than is claimed - often nothing more than a loss leader at very little loss. The counting down timer etc on the website is a psychology trick, (look up the scarcity effect by Cialdini).

It seems you have to be extremely sceptical to get anything worthwhile.

  11. WARNING!!!
Unfortunately I bought a £19 Snowboots Groupon voucher for Urshu. In my opinion it was a complete con!

Whilst the deal was live they had a selection of snowboots in all sizes. As soon as the time to buy the deal closed, styles were removed and sizes became very restrictive (ie only size 3 & 8!) In fact this was even before the voucher was activated!! Hence, it was impossible to get the boots you wanted.

I would never buy from this company again and have asked for a refund. This deal was purchased by over 10,000 people and I expect there will be alot of other disappointed people.

  12. The exact same thing has happened to me. I've just emailed Urshu asking what will happen if they don't get my size in stock, but don't expect to hear anything back!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Urshu told me that I could get a refund from Groupon. However, it's impossible to get through to Groupon on the phone and so far all they've sent me is an automated response acknowledging my request. It's been a few days now and I'm not that impressed with their customer services.

If I were you I would also complain and ask for a refund. The more of us that do so, the more likely they will take the Urshu con seriously.

By the way I see that Urshu are currently trying to fob people off with a pair of cheap looking wellies instead of snowboots! Complete rip off.

Have a look on zalando.co.uk. They've got a good range of snowboots on there at the moment. I just treated myself to a pair! Good luck

  14. Exactly the same problem with the others. There is no stock for the good scarves from the beginning. I think urshu just fooled the customers. this shopping experience is nightmare!! And I asked a refund from groupon, the customer service is really rubbish, only automated response!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree Urshu should be ashamed to offer a selection of scarves and then when you innocently try to but your choice has dwindled to one or two, which you can purchase on the highstreet for a few quid!!
Shocking for Urshu I will never purchase from them again and Groupon - you should also be ashamed these Customers should be KING!

  16. I have reported Urshu and Groupon to the Office of Fair Trading for their misleading and false advertising.

I hear that the OFT are currently looking into Groupon and so if you have been ripped off too, the more people that complain the better. If you need their number it's 08454 04 05 06. The call was quick and the person I spoke to seemed very sympathetic to the con, but the more people that report Urshu the better!

  17. I have purchased the Urshu deal on 2nd December, offering a pair of £60 shoes for £19 as I thought it would be a great christmas present. Delivery was apparently guaranteed within 10 days.

Now, with only 4 days before Christmas I have still not received my shoes, and have tried contacting Urshu but have had no response. The phone number doesn't seem to exist, and they are ignoring all my emails.

DO NOT BUY ANY OF URSHU'S GROUPON DEALS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I too fell for the snow boot offer of £19 with over 60% off! They arrived today and saying I'm disappointed is an understatement! As above, the sizes and styles were limited when ordering, and those I did eventually pick, I have discovered since opening them can be found in amazon for between £16 and £19! Going into the website just says they are closed! Complete Con!! Do not buy urshu vouchers!!

  19. My scarf arrived this morning from Urshu but its not the one I ordered, they sent a replacement. I dont like it. Can only hope in the new year (when they reopen) that I get refund! But not holding my breath also postage was double what groupon had said.

  20. I was just doing some research as I was thinking of buying the current snow boot deal! Thank you for saving me wasting my money :o) Groupon are fab for hair and beauty deals, I have bought some great vouchers but I'm very skeptical of their other offers i.e clothes, shoes, toys.

    ReplyDelete
  21. same thing happened to me..I have one pair but can't seem to get through to the company to order the other pair. After reading everyone's notes I think I will be getting a refund.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So glad I researched this deal further as I was just about to purchase these boots. Thank you!

  23. Rats, thought I had got a bargain, was getting a bit suspicious so thought I would Google reviews of Urshu boots and came across this blog. Too late, as I have purchased the voucher (first thing I have bought from Groupon) - you never know, I might get a decent pair of boots, but I will certainly be wary in future.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh heck, I wish I'd found this website last night! Have bought the snowboots. Does anyone know how the sizing works? My daughter is normally shoe size 5. Many thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I bought these snow boots also for my annual ski trip, but found out only when I went to redeem the voucher that Urshu only commences despatch once the deal has expired, and guess what, it's the day I go away. Naughty things; they should have made this clear on the deal instead of hooking people in falsely. Needless to say I'm cacpncelling the deal with Groupon. I did speak to zgroupon and they're going to investigate.by also, when I tried to call Urshu the phone rang and rang and finally disconnected. I've had good experiences with Groupon until this time and it's made me wonder whether to bother in future as its too much hassle when things go wrong.

  26. wish i had found this the other day, ive tried putting in the voucher code that groupen sent but the website does not recognised the code.

Groupen are looking into the query, but after reading these reviews, think I will just ask for a refund!!

    Thanks everyone

  27. Reading all he above comments about Urshu :-( I am still awaiting an order from them made in November but they have (surprisingly) removed their telephone number from website - does anyone have it please??

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have also bought the snowboots and waiting for them to arrive.. bit concerned now. :-(
Originally my Groupon voucher wouldnt work, but then I tried again a couple of hours later and it did.. so fingers crossed that I get some boots I can wear ! Wish I had found this review site first.

  29. I ordered two pairs - one gift for my husband and thank goodness they arrived in time for Christmas and he likes them! meanwhile, my own pair have never arrived, I've emailed Urshu and not got a response, and it's extrememly shady for any company not to have a phone number on it's website. I'll be trying to get hold of Groupon....

  31. Dawn - I just managed to speak to Geraldine at Urshu customer service and she was very helpful! telephone number is 02920 668064 hope we both get our boots but she assured me that if I can't find them thru Royal Mail tracking then I can get a refund of my postage thru them, and then get Groupon to refund cost of boots (if they haven't got the ones I want in stock). Can't do more than that eh? good luck

  32. i bought a voucher for urshu shoes for my sons wedding. as i was looking for some gold shoes i thought yes there expensive but with the voucher not soo bad. the voucher was £20.00 for upto £60.00 the shoes were £75.00. plus postage. they didnt come in time also they sent wrong size. so still cant waer them. i recieved no paperwork so had no return address, i have emailed 3 times with no reply and i have emailed bk and no reply. i have asked groupon who are still advertising this company but they didnt help either.

  33. Have just found this blog after trying to resolve my issue, totally thinking that I'd be a one-off. I too had the stock problems and then had no replies from Urshu.

I also spoke to Geraldine, hearing other voices in the background as if on the phone, so unless it's a big coincidence I would guess they all say their name is Geraldine! She was helpful though, or at least seemed so; she said I can contact Groupon for a refund and they should happily oblige. Here's hoping...!

    ReplyDelete
  34. in addition to the above post, I'd also be very interested to know if anyone has actually got a refund from either urshu or groupon? No-one to date has mentioned that they have...

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm glad I have read these posts. I too have just been researching Urshu thinking I was the only one who hadnt had their delivery and after sending 5 e-mails to them since December 28th (purchased a deal on 19th Dec) have not received any response and couldnt find a telephone number for them.

I have e-mailed groupon and was told they would look into this but a week later I still havent had a reponse. I will try and contact 'Geraldine' too.

  36. I did, but it took some time and a fair bit of chasing!

I got a refund from Groupon, but I'm still waitin on a refund from Urshu. I ordered boots and asked them to contact me before sending them out as I needed to ask about sizing before my order was sent. They failed to read my note on my order and sent them anyway. They acknowledged their error in an email. The boots didn't fit and I had to send them back. I paid £3.99 for postage and £4.21 to return them to Urshu. I have sent 3 emails requesting a refund on my postage (which under Trading Standards they are obliged to do) but to date they have failed to respond.
My refund from Groupon was actioned within 2 weeks. I have now started a complaint against Urshu via Trading Standards.

  38. Well, my boots did arrive last week and actually they're rather nice! Fortunately they didn't wait for the deal to expire (this would have meant them being despatched in February) so I wasn't expecting them this quickly. Hope you all get your boots or your money back.

    still waiting...

  42. Hi,

Bought boots using my Groupon voucher and the heel broke off on the first wearing. I would question the original price of these boots

I have emailed Urshu 5 times
I have telephone the number on the voucher which just rings out
I have send a letter snail mail

    No response to anything
I have now put an official complaint into Groupon who I believe have a duty to protect their customers when they choose their "partners"

    Hopefully I'll get somewhere

    Tracey

  43. Try Trading Standards. Groupon don't seem to be bothered and prefer to just send automated responses.

  44. Interesting - I've been having huge problems getting a refund from Groupon/Urshu for snow boots NOT received. My original order was placed at the beginning of December. Thanks to your blog, I've now addressed by email to BW Group in the hope that at least they will respond.
    I shan't hold my breath!

  45. IF only i had seen this website BEFORE i purchased a groupon ticket for pumps from Urshu .. needless to say that the selection for the mens is a bit ... poor

and the website keeps ticking over on the checkout screen "Connection lost, retrying connection ... " so as yet, i haven't even ordered the pumps!!!

anyway, i think a refund will be in order from groupon..

  46. They are doing deals now through wowcher but will never purchase from them again. decided to buy a 7 tier shoe rack that was supposed to hold up to 21 pairs of shoes but can safely hold 9 and 2 pair of flip flops (only if you can fit them inside each other. Tried contacting them with reference to poor quality and was asked to send them back 5 week ago and still heard nothing.

  47. I bought a Groupon voucher with a £5 off code bringing the Urshu boots down to £14. They arrived about three weeks later and I like them. I was under no illusions as to the quality but they are fine for the price. I am wearing them as slippers!

  49. I bought a groupon voucher for the snowboots just before xmas. There were limited choices in terms of sizing but I figured that was due to popularity. Boots arrived, very comfortable (i have wider than average feet so was a bit worried they would be too narrow) and I have worn them several times especially during the recent snow. A bargain in my eyes, sorry to hear that others have had problems. Hope you get them sorted soon.

  50. DO NOT USE THESE DISHONEST PEOPLE - I ordered one pair of boots and received two pairs. I contacted Urshu, they admitted their mistake, thanked me for my honesty and asked I just return the boots and that they would take care of the return postage from Ireland of €10.75 (I have this confirmed in an email). It has now been 6 weeks since I returned the boots and I've yet to receive the postage refund and they are not getting back to me on any of my communications and have no phone number.

  51. Avoid like the Plague. No reply to emails or follow up from Groupon. Waited 6 weeks and still no boots. Just contacted Groupon, again, and getting a refund.

    ReplyDelete
  52. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS WEBSITE. I ordered a pair of size 6 and paid £64.99 and they sent size 5 too small! They admitted their mistakke and asked me to return them and they would pay postage. Dispite numerous calls and email no refund and no booots. Today they told me to get a refund from Groupon and i dint buy them through Groupon.
