Predicted fashion trends for 2011 – what’s on the catwalk?

New Year, new trends. I'm taking a look ahead to predict the fashions that are going to be big in 2011, starting with the S/S 2011 catwalks.

Trend 1: Midi skirts

Last year the maxi skirt was in, but this year ankles are on show as the midi skirt makes it into fashion. Remember, keep it mid-calf length for maximum fashion respect.

L-R: Celine, Nina Ricci, YSL, YSL

Trend 2: 1970s fashions

Sigh... It's 2011 and we're still copying the fashions of past decades. What to look for - headscarves, flares and bellbottoms, denim, crochet.

L-R: Salvatore Ferragamo, Pucci, Pucci, Elie Tahari

Trend 3: Jumpsuits

In-keeping with the 1970s trends, jumpsuits are in fashion again, but this time with a more relaxed, flared trouser rather than skin-tight. In the summer, I expect this will develop into 70s style playsuits. Keep an eye out for large prints, bright colours, flared trousers and drop-waists.

L-R: Diane Von Furstenburg, Elie Saab,  designer unknown - as seen on Harper's Bazaar website, Gucci

Trend 4: Stripes

Ok, so stripes are in every spring because they're so fresh, but this year stripes go wide. Look out for volumous shapes, stripes tops with flared trousers and lots of horizontal stripes.

L-R: Jil Sander, Moschino, Wunderkind, Jason Wu

Trend 5: Lace
Think thick, old fashioned lace rather than the stretchy small lace that has been in fashion recently. Some blogs say to wear lace over just underwear, but who are we kidding? This is the UK! The key to the trend is to try and find it in white, LWD's (Little White Dresses!) are everywhere on the catwalks.

L-R: D&G, Ralph Lauren, Marchesa, D&G

Also keep an eye out for: animal prints, wide leg trousers, bright colours, neons and lots of leather!
